As the world converges for Milan Design Week—the largest annual design gathering globally—Ogun State, Nigeria,
is stepping onto the international stage through a strategic partnership with the Creative Youth Community Development Initiative (CYCDI) in collaboration with Collegiate Milan Bovisa and Università LUM- School of Management Milan, Artnovation: The Rock That Remembers will launch from April 22–26, 2026.
Led by its visionary and transformative Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, Ogun State will showcase its rich heritage, tourism potential, and investment opportunities through the iconic Olumo Rock—positioning it as a global symbol of cultural memory, innovation, and economic potential.
A Landmark Cultural Dialogue: Olumo Rock Meets the Duomo
Artnovation: The Rock That Remembers is a multidisciplinary exhibition that brings together art, fashion, design, and innovation, creating a powerful dialogue between Olumo Rock and Milan Cathedral. Through this fusion of natural and architectural monuments, the exhibition explores how landscapes and structures preserve memory, shape identity, and inspire contemporary design.
The programme opens with an exclusive VIP screening on April 22, 2026, at Collegiate Milan Bovisa, Piazza Emilio Alfieri 5, Milan. The exhibition will then run from April 23 to April 26, 2026, welcoming the public daily from 10:00 AM, offering an immersive experience that signals a bold new chapter in Africa–Europe creative exchange.
The Exhibition: From Memory to Material, From Heritage to Design
At the heart of Artnovation is a curated exhibition of ten works—five paintings and five fashion installations—that collectively narrate a journey across continents, cultures, and creative disciplines. By combining storytelling imagery, hand-painted textures, indigenous Abeokuta textiles (from adire-centric brands such as Ojúde Aṣọ), and Milanese lace, the works reinterpret heritage through a contemporary lens.
The five paintings trace a compelling progression: from Origin, where Olumo Rock emerges as the first act of creation, to Legacy, where it becomes a place of refuge; through Unseen, where memory dissolves into abstraction; to Matter, where raw stone evolves into structured design; and finally Open, where both Olumo and the Duomo transform into future-facing products and environments. Together, they chart a journey from earth to idea, memory to material, and tradition to innovation.
Complementing the paintings, the five fashion installations translate these narratives into sculptural, wearable forms. From Genesis Drapery and Shelter Skin to Whispers of Indigo, Material Future, and The Bridge Garment, each piece merges African textile heritage with Italian craftsmanship—positioning fashion as a medium of storytelling, innovation, and cultural diplomacy.
Special Event: From Culture to Economy
A key highlight of the programme is the special event titled “From the Rock to the World” on April 23, 2026, at 4:00 PM. This curated experience will feature poetry, music, and creative performances under the theme “From Art to Design,” alongside a high-level fireside conversation on “From Culture to Economy.”
The session will bring together thought leaders, institutions, and creatives to explore how cultural heritage can be transformed into economic value—driving partnerships, innovation, and trade across Africa and Europe.
A Vision for Global Creative Exchange
Speaking on the vision behind the programme, Foluke Michael, Chief Curator of Artnovation, stated:
“We are beginning a conversation that will spur global action, and we are proud to start with Nigeria and Italy. Artnovation connects storytelling, art, fashion, and design to create new pathways for innovation, partnership, and trade. By bridging the European Renaissance with African heritage, we are creating a new spark—one that transforms culture into economic opportunity.”
Artnovation was first unveiled in December 2025 at the Italian Consulate in Lagos, marking the beginning of a sustained cultural and economic dialogue between Africa and Europe. That moment planted the seed; Milan is where it blooms.
From Abeokuta to Milan: A Global Stage for African Narratives
As the journey that began in Ogun State unfolds in Milan, Artnovation: The Rock That Remembers stands as a powerful testament to the global relevance of African stories. It demonstrates that heritage, when reimagined through innovation and collaboration, can shape the future of design, culture, and economic exchange.
Hosted at the contemporary, internationally recognised Collegiate Milano Bovisa, the exhibition offers a world-class setting for this landmark initiative, bringing together creators, institutions, and global audiences in a shared vision of the future.
